TVS-E is no stranger to the rigorous QS-9000
Quality system. In the month of July 2001, The
Chennai plant of TVS-E received this
certification. Following this success the Tumkur
plant adopted this system in the first half of
2002 and TUV Rheinland held the final audit
during May 2002. The certification has been
issued now and is valid till September 2005.
The Tumkur Plant of TVSE manufactures a range of
products including UPS, Inverters, Rectifiers,
Keyboards and PCB Assemblies. The plant
comprises an EHTP Zone for exports and a
separate DTA location for supplies to the
domestic market. The PCB Assembly facility is
equipped with automated lines for insertion and
SMT boards.
Both the manufacturing plants of TVS-E form the
TVS eServices division which is a BPO Service
Provider offering a range of services from
design to manufacturing. TVS eServices comprises
separate business units for electronic
manufacturing services, power design solutions
and sourcing services including an online
auction portal. Its customers include
multinationals like GE, Tyco, Victron Energie
and Indian brand owners like Zipfone, Simputer
and Sundaram Clayton.
Commenting on this proud moment A Karunakaran,
President, TVS eServices said, "We continue to
be one of the few non-automotive companies in
India to receive this certification. Since TVS-E
is committed to quality it has chosen to adopt
this rigorous standard, even though it is not
currently demanded by the Electronics industry".
The requirements for QS-9000 certification are
aimed at ensuring customer focus, maintaining
consistency in systems and processes and take
into account the continuous improvements that
are taking place in the company.
The evolution of QS-9000
The ISO when introduced, represented the first
ever global common standard for Quality
Management Systems, to monitor adherence to a
scheduled process, but in time was found to do
little for improvement in product quality and
customer focus.
The Big 3 Auto majors - GM, Ford and Chrysler
increasingly found the ISO system inadequate.
Each worked with numerous suppliers and shared
several as well. Suppliers were finding it
difficult to cope with individual systems with
unique specifications. The Big 3 joined hands to
develop one system, which would benefit the
supplier and build a common process that would
cater to each of their requirements.
They took the ISO 9000 chassis and built it up.
They used all the 20 clauses in the ISO 9000,
but added specific techniques and requirements,
as against the general guidelines suggested by
ISO documentation.
Based on the ISO 9000 clauses, they made the
major Section 1 far more stringent, and built a
Section 2, which dealt with customer specific
requirements.
Business Results: QS-9000 places a high degree
of importance on business results, which are
expected to show positive trends. This
constitutes one of many checks built into the
QS, to maintain focus on continuous improvement.
The QS has a Product Highlights
Fastest bill printer redefining printing speed.
Recognises the unique opportunities in the
Indian retail industry.
Co-created by customers.
Contemporary integrated design.
TVS Electronics, the largest computer peripheral
manufacturer in India, today announced the
launch of its breakthrough transaction business
printer 'TVS PROTON'.
TVS Proton redefines Printer Speed by replacing
the traditional CPS (characters per second)
metric with BPM (Bills Per Minute) and promises
to set new technology standards. The world's
quickest bill printer, generates 10 Bills Per
Minute, making it 20% faster than any other
transaction printer in the world.
The unique New Millennium Styling, Roll Paper
feeder, re-inking of ribbons through Ink Bank
Technology makes it the most innovative
Transaction Printer in the world.
Market Opportunity -Targeted at the retail
customer, the launch of TVS PROTON is a
milestone for TVSE and for the industry. Dusty
environment, poor paper quality, unique paper
feeding requirements, widespread use of
inconsistent quality ribbons, high cost of
operations - the typical bane of the Indian
retailer, pose unique challenges for transaction
printing in India TVS Proton has translated this
in to a unique opportunity which opens up a new
market of 1 million retail customers in India.
Customer as Co-Designers - Extensive research
was undertaken to gain an in-depth understanding
of the retail environment and customer needs for
transaction printing. Over 2 lakh man-hours
across 15 months, and a financial outlay of Rs.
4 crores, went into the market research. The
young R&D team (average age 23) involved 600
retailers across 12 cities in verticals such as
grocery, pharmacy, restaurants, footwear,
apparel and gifts & jewellery stores for this
research. Around 24 retailers participated
actively in the design process as co-designers.
The product concept was then tested through
'customer boardrooms' - workshops where
customers decide product features and benefits.
The product prototype was also tested with
select prospective customers to evaluate
performance in real market situations.
"With the launch of TVS PROTON, we have
reiterated our commitment to Deep understanding
of customer needs, and developing breakthrough
products that address the business needs of
micro businesses," said Mr. Gopal Srinivasan,
Director, TVS Electronics.
Priced competitively, the printer will be
available at over 2000 distribution network
offices across 300 cities and towns.
Unique features of TVS PROTON
One of the most striking features of the printer
is its compact and refreshingly different
aesthetic appeal from conventional dot matrix
printers.
1. The World's Quickest Bill Printer- TVS Proton
operates at a speed of 10 Bills per minute at
printing speed of 360 CPS and paper feeding rate
of 5 IPS.
2. Roll paper feed options- TVS PROTON will be
the first dot matrix printer to offer both the
front Roll paper feeding option and Front
&straight paper path. This makes it extremely
easy to operate and eliminates issues like paper
jams.
3.Patented Ink bank technology "Ink Savings
Bank"- The printer prints up to 10 million
characters per Ink Bank. Cost of Printing is
reduced a whooping 50%.
4.New Millennium Styling- With its unique
aesthetics design it saves 40% table space than
most transaction printers today & is also
extremely user friendly in retail environment.
5.'Selicon' self lubrication mechanism- The
self-lubrication allows for smooth movement of
the carriage continuously, making the printer
trouble free and low maintenance.
"With the launch of Proton today and the
recently launched Sprint a Retail Automation
system TVS Electronics is fast emerging as a "e
Transaction Hub" in India for all micro
businesses segments, we intend a series of new
products in this space which combine Deep
understanding of the Indian Consumer and our
Innovative Design Capabilities" says Director
Mr.Gopal Srinivasan.
The company's revenue for the year ended
December 31, 2001 stood at Rs. 216 crores. The
company's revenue for the first half of 2002
(Jan-June 2002 unaudited) was Rs. 100.27crores.
'business planning' section, that provides
guidelines on business planning measures and
targets to check the success of the plan. The
company level data is derived from the criteria
laid down in the business planning stage.
Customer Satisfaction: QS guidelines clearly
state that customer satisfaction must be
measured objectively and towards a goal of
continuous improvement. After the Big 3 auto
majors came together to develop the QS 9000
standard in 1995 - 96, it quickly grew to become
the accepted auto industry standard. Today, the
QS-9000 is becoming mandatory to supply to
virtually any major auto manufacturer, anywhere
in the world. |
